The Western Regional Office of Ducks Unlimited, Inc. (DU) has an immediate opening for an experienced and motivated Land Protection Specialist to help deliver DU’s on-the-ground conservation program in California and Nevada. DU and its affiliate Wetlands America Trust are jointly accredited through the Land Trust Alliance (LTA) Commission, which recognizes the organization for meeting national standards for excellence, upholding the public trust, and ensuring conservation efforts are permanent. DU is North America’s third largest land trust. This position will be stationed in DU’s Western Regional Office in Rancho Cordova, California, and be part of a team of professionals responsible for implementing DU’s mission by conserving, restoring, and managing wetlands and associated habitats.
Candidates must have at a minimum, a Bachelor of Science degree in business, agriculture, natural resources, or other applicable field. An advanced degree is desirable. Applicants must have at least three years of relevant experience. Applicants must have a working knowledge of land transactions, appraisal practices, due diligence processes, and state and federal grant programs that support conservation easement and fee title acquisitions. Excellent written and oral communication, interpersonal, organizational, and problem-solving skills, and the ability to use personal computers are required. Proven proposal/grant writing skills and experience and demonstrated ability to work with private landowners are desired. Familiarity with the program area’s agricultural lands and practices and natural lands and biological resources is beneficial.
Duties and Responsibilities
The incumbent will be responsible for identifying potential land conservation opportunities, coordinating with landowners to develop land protection projects, performing due diligence, conducting land transactions, and securing funding to support conservation easement and fee title acquisitions of wetlands and associated habitats and waterfowl-friendly agricultural lands. The primary focus of this position will be in the Sacramento Valley and Intermountain West portions of California. Additional work may occur in DU’s other high priority areas in California and Nevada. Incumbent will report to DU’s Director of Conservation Programs, coordinate with the various regional biologists that are responsible for developing and delivering DU’s habitat restoration and enhancement work on these same landscapes, and work closely with DU’s Manager of Land Protection based at National Headquarters in Memphis, Tennessee on due diligence and land transactions. Incumbent will participate on the national Lands Team which is comprised of DU’s land protection staff from across the U.S. Incumbent will also be responsible for conducting annual stewardship monitoring of DU’s easement and fee title lands in the program area in compliance with LTA standards.
